Irene Nicholas launched Nicholas in 2009. She grew up in Melbourne and spent about twenty years there as a retail chief executive and buying director before starting the label, which is now based in Los Angeles.

Nicholas is known for bright, bold prints and feminine shapes with clean lines, mostly in dresses and separates meant for special occasions and holidays. The brand describes its look as a mix of coastal and city life drawn from both California and Australia, and it offers inclusive sizing across its collections. It is also sold through department stores and online retailers overseas.
